Novels are wonderful, but the time commitment is often daunting. Short stories can change your life or at least affect it profoundly in only a few hundred or thousand words—a few minutes or maybe half an hour. It has happened to me more than once. These stories in The Road to Mindo are mostly about exploring, with an adventurous spirit, the flip side of materialism—finding joy in the journey, as the song says.

Most of the stories are written in the first person because I like the immediacy, the feeling you get when you read a story told this way. It’s like listening to an old storyteller sitting around a campfire. It sounds personal when the storyteller takes a second look at years gone by, spreading them out for the listener in search of lost meanings to life and the source of real joy.

If there is an unexplained hopeful magnetism in this process it is proof of the mystery and value of living, and the inherent worth of every human life.I believe that while there is life, there are no wasted lives. If you find this hard to accept, consider the words Jesus spoke to the man dying on the cross next to him.
